Information about computer slowdowns can be found in Task Manager. Task Manager provides a wealth of information about the processes currently running on the computer. Task Manager lets you monitor the performance of your hard drive. Hard drive usage is maximized if 100% usage of the hard drive is observed and this is something that can never happen. This slows down the performance of the computer and needs to be fixed. This problem can often occur after upgrading to Windows 10.

You can open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc altogether.

Here are some ways to fix this problem in Windows 10 operating system.

v  Restart computer

Restarting the computer is a simple solution. This will allow the computer to be reused as normal but the cause of the problem will not be determined.

v  Update Microsoft Windows

Installing the latest updates can fix these unknown issues with the Windows 10 system. You can check if the latest update is installed by going to the "Updates and Security" section of the Windows Settings app.

 Open Settings

Right-click on the Windows Start button and select Settings

Settings > Update & Security settings > Windows Update

v  Disable Windows Search

You can test whether disabling the disk issue by pausing the Windows search feature. To do this, open an admin command prompt and enter this command. net.exe stop "Windows search". This will stop Windows Search from running until the next time Windows restarts.

Open Command Prompt as Administrator

Press the Windows Start button at the bottom left.

Type in "Command Prompt".

Right-click on Command Prompt and click "Run as administrator".

Type net.exe stop "Windows search" and hit Enter.

If Windows Search causes Disk usage to reach 100%, you can permanently disable it by following the procedure below.

Press the Windows key + R, enter services.msc, and hit Enter.

v  Check For Malware

If your computer is infected with malware, it may increase disk usage. If there is anti-virus software running in the background, it should find the problem. Scan the disk with your anti-virus software. This can be a time-consuming process as you may need to identify and remove malware.

 Stop the Superfetch Service

Another possible cause of this problem is the Windows Superfetch service. Use the command net.exe to stop sysmain  to temporarily disable the service.

 Open Command Prompt as Administrator

Press the Windows Start button at the bottom left.

Type in "Command Prompt".

Right-click on Command Prompt and click "Run as administrator".

v  Change power options from balanced to high performance

You can also try to solve the problem of 100% disk usage in Windows 10 by changing the power settings.

To do this, do the following

Open control panel (Press Windows key + R then type: control then hit Enter)

 Control Panel > Power Option

Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings.

Select the High-performance option from the drop-down box and make sure all plan settings are set to their defaults.

v  Reset Virtual Memory in Windows 10

Virtual memory is also considered by the hard disk as RAM and is used to transfer temporary files when there is no real RAM. Errors in pagefile.sys can cause your computer to use up to 100% of its disks. The solution to this problem is to reset your virtual memory settings.

To do this, do the following

Open Control Panel (Press Windows key + R then type: control then hit Enter)

Control Panel >  System > Advance System Setting

Click Settings in the Performance section.

Select the Advanced tab and click the Change button

Make sure the box titled Automatically manage paging file size is checked.

You can also select No paging file, click OK and restart. This prevents the use of virtual memory and may improve the disk performance of your system

v  Run Check Disk

If there are any physical problems with the hard disk, you can check it with the check disk. Usually, high disk usage indicates a disk usage application or a logical problem. But the possibility of physical harm should not be ruled out.

Press the Windows Start button at the bottom left.

Type in "Command Prompt".

Right-click on Command Prompt and click "Run as administrator".

Type chkdsk /r  and hit Enter
